Society for General Microbiology Prize Medal
The Society has instituted a new prize, to be awarded annually to a microbiologist of international standing whose work has had a far-reaching impact beyond microbiology. The winner receives £1000, a prize medal and gives a lecture on his/her work at a Society meeting. The lecture is usually published in a Society journal. The first medal was awarded in 2009. Rules »

Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture
The Society's principal prize, awarded biennially for an outstanding contribution of current importance in microbiology. The winner receives £1000 and gives a lecture on his/her work at a Society meeting. The lecture is usually published in a Society journal. Rules »

Marjory Stephenson was the second president of the Society for General Microbiology (1947 - 1949) and a distinguished pioneer of chemical microbiology.
Colworth Prize Lecture
Awarded biennially for an outstanding contribution in an area of applied microbiology. It is sponsored by the Colworth Laboratory of Unilever Research. The winner receives £1000 and gives a lecture on his/her work at a Society meeting. The lecture is usually published in a Society journal. Rules »

Fleming Prize Lecture

Alexander Fleming was the first president of the Society (1945 - 1947) and received a Nobel Prize for his discovery of penicillin.
Peter Wildy Prize for Microbiology Education
Awarded annually for an outstanding contribution to microbiology education, without restriction on the area of microbiology in which the award is made. This may include university teaching or education of the general public, school pupils or professional groups. The winner receives £1000 and gives a lecture on his/her work at a Society meeting. Peter Wildy was president of the Society from 1978 to 1981 and a founding editor of the Journal of General Virology in 1967. He was a distinguished virologist and a charismatic teacher.
Fred Griffith Prize Lecture
Awarded biennially in recognition of long and distinguished service in any area of microbiology. The winner receives £1000 and gives a personal overview of an area of microbiology at a Society meeting. The lecture is usually published in a Society journal. Rules »

Fred Griffith was a pioneer of bacterial genetics and discovered transformation in pneumococci.

Nominations are now invited and the completed form  should be submitted, accompanied by the appropriate supporting documentation, to:

The deadline for the receipt of nominations is 30 September 2010. The award panel will consider the nominations in the autumn for approval of their decisions by the November meeting of the SGM Council. The outcome will be announced in the February 2011 issue of Microbiology Today.
Kathleen Barton-Wright Memorial Lecture
Awarded jointly with the Institute of Biology and alternately with the Society for Applied Microbiology from 1986 to 2002.
